Utah Solar Tax Credit
For Utah residents who install a solar panel system on their home, the Utah solar tax credit, also known as the Renewable Energy Systems Tax Credit or RESTC, is an incentive that allows qualifying taxpayers to subtract the exact amount of credit they have received from the income tax amount they owe the state. This incentive covers up to 25% or $800 (whichever amount is less) of the purchase and installation costs for residential solar projects.
Utah residents should be aware that the cap for RESTC will be lowered to $400 in 2023 before it expires in 2024. Utah’s RESTC can also be claimed in addition to the federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC), though the ITC’s value will also lower in the coming years. With energy costs predicted to increase, now is the ideal time to get started on your solar project!
How to Claim the Utah Solar Tax Credit in St. George
The process to claim your tax credit is relatively simple.
- Install an eligible solar energy system
- File a solar PV application
- Request a TC-40e form from your installer or the GOED (keep this form with your records to provide if audited)
- When it comes time to file your state income tax, claim the Utah solar tax credit on your TC-40a form
Commercial Benefits
The commercial Investment Renewable Energy Systems Tax Credit is available for Utah businesses with larger commercial projects. This incentive covers up to 10% of the system’s purchase and installation costs or $50,000, whichever amount is less. It is refundable but can only be claimed on the same year’s taxes as when the solar system was installed.
Utah Solar Easement and Access
Utah’s solar easement provision protects the solar investment of residents by ensuring their right to unrestricted access to the sun. With this law, you can come to an agreement with your neighbors to prevent any shading of your solar panel system while the sun is shining so that you can reap the maximum benefits of solar energy. To be legally binding, the solar easement must be in writing and filed at your county recorder’s office.
The Utah solar rights law also protects your right to solar energy by preventing developers from prohibiting the installation of solar panels on your home.
Net Metering
Net metering is a billing policy that allows Utah residents with rooftop solar energy systems to send their extra solar energy back to the grid in exchange for electric bill credits. This offsets the cost of energy usage by solar panels that generate excess energy so that you can save money on your electric bill. You will only be required to pay the "net" energy or the difference between how much solar was sold and how much was actually used.
While net metering is not mandated in Utah, many residents can still benefit from the policy. Rocky Mountain Power is the most prominent electricity provider in the state that offers a net metering program.
